Coastlines have a special appeal to the landscape photography. This is mainly because they’re a dynamic environment that constantly changes throughout the day. Shooting seascapes is challenging but highly rewarding.
CHALLENGES
There is no such thing as a typical beach. There are sandy beaches and rocky beaches. Beaches covered in shingle and beaches comprised of broken sea shells. Each of these types of beach brings challenges and rewards.
The first challenge is staying safe. There are numerous hazards on a beach. The biggest danger is the sea itself. Tide tables are a vital resource when shooting at the coast. Partly so you can plan your photography, but also in order to stay safe. You should always take care not to get cut off by incoming tides. Be aware of how tides may affect your passage across or up and down a beach. Another – less obvious – danger is slippery rock. Seaweed covered rocks can be treacherous, particularly when you’re weighed down with camera gear.
Photographically, the challenges are numerous. Sand, being brighter than a mid-tone, can fool exposure meters into underexposing. One or two-stops positive compensation is therefore often necessary. Another challenge is keeping your camera level. This is especially important when the sea is included in your composition. The sea doesn’t slope! Using a spirit-level fitted to your camera will benefit your photography enormously. However, don’t just check it once. A tripod can slowly sink in wet sand without you noticing, particularly if you’re shooting with water lapping around its legs.

WATER AND MOVEMENT
Water at the coast behaves more dynamically than water flowing along a river or stream. Water at the coast washes backwards and forwards, with a force that changes depending on the character of the tides. Waves washing backwards and forwards involves movement. This means that you need to think carefully about shutter speed. Do you want the movement of the waves ‘frozen’ or blurred. If the latter, how blurred? Waves have an interesting texture and shape. Use too long a shutter speed and this can be lost. However, this is entirely an aesthetic choice. There’s no right or wrong answer! Use the table below to help you decide the effect you’d like to create.

Stormy weather at the coast will cause the highest, most dramatic waves. These conditions are very photogenic, and you’ll often have the beach to yourself. However, more vigilance is needed, you don’t want you or your equipment swept out to sea!

TIDES
Tides are chiefly caused by a combination of the moon’s gravitational pull and the earth’s rotation. When the moon is directly overhead the coastline below will experience high tide. Slightly counter-intuitively a coastline exactly 180° around the planet will see high tide at exactly the same time too. Coastlines at 90° to the moon’s position will experience their low tide. As the moon orbits around the earth it pulls the seas along, altering the tides as it does so. Due to the way the earth rotates as the moon orbits a coastline will see a high tide approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
To complicate matters further the sun has an influence too. A few days after a new moon (when the moon is between the earth and the sun) a coastline will experience its highest high tide and then six hours later its lowest low tide of the month (a phenomenon known as a spring tide, though it doesn’t occur just in spring). When the moon is half full (either at first or third quarter) high tide will be lower than average and low tide will be higher than average. These factors mean that careful planning is necessary when contemplating photographing a coastline. The Internet is a good source of information in this regard. A website or app that shows timely and accurate tide tables for your chosen location is extremely useful.

OTHER TIPS
Look for details on the beach at low tide that aren’t visible at high tide.
The most dramatic waves will be experienced as high tide approaches.
Salt water will corrode your tripod if you get it wet. Hose it down with fresh water when you return home.
The action of the tides benefits seascape photography because they clean a beach of distractions such as footprints.
At low tide, and if the beach is sandy, take care not to walk across sand that could be part of a potential picture. Walk along the margins of a beach – either near the top of the beach or along the water’s edge – to find your spot.
